SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Scott AFB was recently awarded $75,000 as first runner-up in an Air Mobility Command energy conservation contest. 

Elizabeth Toftemark, 375th Civil Engineer Squadron energy manager, said the base earned the award for its energy use reduction initiatives. 

"We won runner up because of all of the projects we are doing toward energy reduction," she said. 

Energy use reduction programs at Scott focus on facility energy, alternative fuel use, cultural change initiatives, pursuit of renewable energy technology and water conservation. 

Specific actions taken at Scott include installing computerized lighting controls in AMC headquarters that turn off lights during non-work periods, a large increase in E-85 alternative fuel use, installing a program that automatically shuts off 10,000 computers on base--saving $460,000 per year, and demolishing old facilities--saving $100,000. Plus, the base installed more efficient HVAC systems, lighting, bathroom fixtures and electric/water meters. 

Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. took top honor in the competition, and won $100,000. Travis Air Force Base, Calif., claimed second runner-up, and won $50,000. Joseph Bogdan, of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., won first place in the individual energy saver category.
