Holiday Heroes: In Service of Mission and Cheer

19 Dec 2024 | Johannes Schmidt, MCSC Office of Public Affairs and Communication Marine Corps Systems Command

Since the earliest days of our nation’s history, the United States Marine Corps has been home to countless heroes—men and women who have risked their lives in service to our country and our constitution. From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, legendary Marines like Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, Sgt. Maj. Daniel J. Daly, and Cpl. Joseph Vittori have forged enduring legacies of valor and selflessness that continue to inspire generations of Americans.

But heroes can also be found within the ranks of MARCORSYSCOM and PEO LS. Though they may not serve on the front lines, these dedicated Marines, civilians, and contractors work tirelessly to ensure warfighters around the globe are equipped to fight and win whenever the nation calls.

As we prepare to celebrate the winter festivities, we would like to recognize a few special “Holiday Heroes”—individuals nominated by their colleagues and leadership for their outstanding dedication, exceptional contributions, and the holiday spirit they bring to supporting the mission and the Marines we serve.

Bringing Smiles to Stafford

William “Travis” Hubbard, a software baseline manager at PEO LS’ PM MAGTF C2, embodies the spirit of a holiday hero. Based in Stafford, Virginia, Travis is known for his role as Santa Claus, complete with a real beard and authentic suit. Whether waving to children from a fire truck, visiting hospitals, or stepping in for the command holiday party, he spreads joy wherever he goes, making him a cherished figure in his community.

“As Santa, Travis gives to his local community, the regional community, and the command,” said Francis Bonner, chief engineer at PEO LS’ MAGTF C2. “He loves to talk about how excited the kids are to see him wave and call out to them, and he even giggles about the adults who come to their porches to wave. Travis goes above and beyond to celebrate the most joyful time of the year.”

Hometown Service in the Storm

Javier Reyes, an equipment specialist at PM CSS in Albany, Georgia, was nominated for his unwavering commitment to fostering joy and camaraderie in the workplace, where he plans and organizes holiday events with unmatched dedication. However, his devotion to service extends far beyond the office. As a Reserve Marine, Javier played a role in disaster relief efforts in his native Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, spending two to three months helping clear roads and assisting residents in salvaging their belongings.

He recalled, “Serving in disaster relief after Hurricane Maria in my own hometown felt like a moment of detachment from my personal needs. It was about providing help for others, putting them first to ensure their well-being. At the time, it felt like the most important thing in the world.”

“She’s just one of those Bright Lights”

Jessica Pabo, who provides administrative support for PM CSS in Albany, Georgia, was nominated for her exceptional efforts in creating a festive and joyful environment in her workplace. She dedicates significant time to planning, organizing, and decorating holiday events, ensuring every detail is thoughtfully executed.

“Jessica is tireless in her dedication to creating a festive and joyful atmosphere at MARCORSYSCOM,” said Greg Rieder, equipment specialist at PM CSS. “She plays a key role in organizing events, often going above and beyond to ensure everything is perfect. Her efforts uplift the spirits of her colleagues and foster camaraderie.”

Defining Community and Service

Yet another example of Southern charm, Daniel Cruz is the last of the Albany “Holiday Heroes.” Currently serving as an equipment specialist for PM TCE, he was nominated for his dedication to giving back to the community. Daniel organizes meals for those in need during Thanksgiving and Christmas, collects toys for Toys for Tots, and supports both local and military football teams by providing meals during practices and games. His tireless efforts to bring people together and uplift those around him embody the true spirit of the holidays.

A Family’s Legacy of Giving Back

Lavonne Robinson, a life cycle logistics professional who has been with MARCORSYSCOM since 1998, is a shining example of servant leadership and a shining example of a holiday hero. Coming from a proud military family, including her husband and late son, both of whom served as Marines, Lavonne’s life has been shaped by a deep commitment to helping others. “I didn’t have much, but what I had, I shared,” she recalled, a lesson instilled in her from a young age by her mother. This ethos has driven her to dedicate herself to countless charitable efforts, from handing out food to the homeless to supporting battered women and volunteering alongside Marines to find and feed homeless veterans—often hiking through snowy woods to find their encampments.

But as Lavonne spoke about her acts of service, it became clear that there was nothing she was prouder of than her son, the late Sgt. Royce Casey Robinson Sr. (USMC Retired)—in her eyes, the real holiday hero.

Royce Casey Robinson Sr., a retired Marine who previously served at MARCORSYSCOM, exemplified the highest ideals of service and heroism throughout his life. RC was known for his unwavering dedication to those under his charge, stepping in to support them as though they were family. At his funeral on Nov. 3, 2024, over 100 friends, family members, and Marines gathered to honor a man whose selflessness touched countless lives. Stories shared that day highlighted his courage, compassion, and steadfast commitment to helping others, whether in uniform, at work, or in his personal life. Even in his passing, RC continued to serve as an organ donor, saving and improving lives—a testament to the profound legacy of service and sacrifice that defines a true hero.

In remembering RC’s heroism, we’re called to remember the heroism of all of those who serve—especially during the holiday season.

“Marines are the real holiday heroes,” said Reyes. “During the holidays, it’s about stepping up for those who can’t be with their loved ones, ensuring they know they have a family right here in the Corps. Looking out for one another is at the heart of who we are.”

As we honor our “Holiday Heroes,” we see that the spirit of the Marine Corps isn’t confined to the front lines—it thrives in the everyday acts of service that strengthen the Corps and the communities we call home. Whether it’s stepping up for a fellow Marine during the holidays, organizing efforts to support those in need, or bringing joy and camaraderie to the workplace, these individuals embody the values of selflessness and commitment that define what it means to serve. Their dedication reminds us that heroism isn’t just about what you do on the battlefield—it’s about how you show up for others, day after day, with the same unwavering sense of duty.
