MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - U.S. Marine Corps private first class Louis Wiesehan, Jr., of Richmond, Indiana, was killed during the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943. After years of initially being declared “nonrecoverable” by Defense Department officials, he returned home and received a hero’s welcome with full military honors in September 2020.
